On June 17, 2020, NYSHealth hosted a webinar on connecting New Yorkers with critical social safety-net programs during the pandemic, including the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), SNAP (food stamps), and options for accessing health insurance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the deep inequities that affect health outcomes of communities across New York City. Further compounding these health disparities, COVID-19 has also led to an unprecedented economic crisis. At the same time, recent events have underscored how racism and inequities continue to affect communities of color, resulting in higher rates of unemployment, lack of health insurance, and food insecurity.

Public Health Solutions (PHS) provides community-based services in many languages to support vulnerable New Yorkers in achieving optimal health and building pathways to reach their potential. Like many of its community-based human service organization partners, PHS has adapted quickly to meet the growing health and food access needs of vulnerable families in New York City as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sandra Jean-Louis, Senior Director of Health and Food Access at PHS, shared PHS’ approach to meeting the health and food access needs of New Yorkers during this time.
