Our Story

Over 65 Years of Improving
Health Outcomes in NYC

1957 Foundation

Established as the Medical and Health Research Association (MHRA) by the NYC Health Department. Created to provide administrative flexibility for securing grants and fostering public health research.

1960s Broadening Scope

Research income grew tenfold. The organization expanded beyond administration into direct community action, launching cervical cancer screenings in Harlem and pioneering air pollution health studies.

1970s Service Pivot

Transformed into a major health service provider. Launched 11 reproductive health centers and became the leading nonprofit provider of WIC nutrition programs for low-income families.

1980s City-Wide Reach

Extended services across all five boroughs. Launched groundbreaking HIV/AIDS research programs and community outreach at a time when the city faced an unprecedented public health crisis.

1990s Research Innovation

Pioneered new models of community-based participatory research. Strengthened partnerships with city agencies and academic institutions to address chronic disease and health disparities citywide.

2000s Digital Health

Embraced technology-driven health initiatives. Launched electronic health records across partner clinics and developed data-informed strategies to track and reduce health inequities across underserved communities.

2020s Today & Beyond

Continuing to drive innovation in public health. Managing hundreds of millions in research funding and programs that serve thousands of New Yorkers – building a healthier, more equitable city for all.
