We are happy to announce that we have a new WIC Center located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn! Call 718-942-6240 to schedule an appointment. Location details at bottom of page.

We help over 40,000 women, infants, and children a year to enroll in the NYS Women Infants and Children (WIC) Program, which provides education and counseling around nutrition and physical activity, breastfeeding support, and vouchers to purchase nutritious foods for eligible pregnant and nursing women and children up to age five years of age. WIC packages help ensure more nutritious diets and improve healthy shopping behaviors. We administer nine free-standing WIC centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Extensive research has found WIC to be a cost-effective investment that improves the nutrition and health of low-income families. Women who participate in WIC give birth to healthier babies, children participating in WIC have lower risk of obesity, and children whose mothers participated in WIC while pregnant show improved mental development.

WIC is a program of the New York State Department of Health funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PHS administers the Neighborhood WIC Program under contract with the New York State Department of Health. For more information on the WIC Program, please visit the New York State Department of Health’s WIC website.

Healthy Lifestyles Sessions

Our Let’s Eat! and Let’s Move! educational sessions are led by a WIC nutritionist to encourage healthy eating and to promote physical activity. Sessions include cooking demonstrations, ideas for inexpensive and nutritious meals, ways to maintain a healthy diet, and healthy lifestyle physical activities the whole family can participate in.

Breastfeeding Counseling and Support

Our Neighborhood WIC multi-cultural and multilingual peer counselors are mothers who help other mothers with breastfeeding. Having breastfed their own children, they help WIC mothers understand the benefits of breastfeeding, and provide one-on-one support to WIC mothers to support breastfeeding success.

Participant-Centered Nutrition Assessment

When participants enter a Neighborhood WIC Center, they discover that it’s all about them. We provide an individualized nutritional assessment in a setting where staff collaborates with participants to help manage and improve their family’s health and wellness.

Kids Eat Right Campaign

Neighborhood WIC participates in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ (AND) Kids Eat Right Campaign (part of the White House’s national childhood obesity initiative). At Neighborhood WIC, we make it our priority to help the families we serve make informed food choices and develop sound eating and physical activity habits.

Our WIC staff also provide referrals to other services including medical and dental care, Medicaid, SNAP, family planning, and other needed services.

Sharing Time

Participants and staff team up in a circle to share their views about a variety of health and nutrition topics as well as share parenting tips and how to best maximize the benefits of the WIC program.
