We are excited to announce the opening of a new Neighborhood Center in Ridgewood, Queens that will provide WIC, SNAP, and health insurance enrollment services. WIC provides food support and nutrition education for low-income pregnant or postpartum women, and for children under 5 years old. This state-of-the-art site is in a new and improved location in the Ridgewood community, which includes a dedicated classroom for nutrition education and physical activity classes, private breastfeeding room, as well as SNAP and health insurance enrollment assistance. We currently reach 1,700 Ridgewood community members. The opening of this new site will enable us to reach even more families.
On September 18, 2017, we were joined by Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Assemblyman Michael Miller, Myrtle Avenue BID, Queens Community Board 5, and many more community partners and staff to officially celebrate the grand opening. Following a ribbon cutting ceremony, we proudly toured our new site, gave out nutritious smoothies to our guests, and then held a community celebration at the Ridgewood Veterans Triangle with games, giveaways, health information, and community resources.
Public Health Solutions operates the largest WIC program in New York State, with eight centers conveniently located in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. PHS’ WIC and SNAP enrollment programs have served the Ridgewood community for over 15 years.
The WIC program has a powerful impact on families. Mothers who participate in WIC have healthier and longer pregnancies and give birth to healthier babies. Children participating in WIC have significantly improved diets and lower risk of obesity, are more up-to-date on immunizations, are more likely to have a regular source of medical care, and show improved intellectual development which helps them succeed in school. Today, more than half of all infants born in the United States receive WIC assistance.
WIC is a program of the New York State Department of Health funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PHS administers the Neighborhood WIC Program under contract with the New York State Department of Health. We thank the NYS Department of Health for continuing to support the crucial services provided by WIC.
