About the Center
Celebrating a thirty-year anniversary in 2006, the New York State Center for Sudden Infant Death has a proud history of education, service and support to families and professionals.
The Center coordinates a statewide program to promote a supportive community response to those affected by the sudden and unexpected death of an infant and to educate professionals and the public about measures to reduce the risk for SIDS, infant safe sleep practices and the needs of grieving families. The New York State Center for Sudden Infant Death is known statewide and nationally for efforts to keep babies healthy and safe.The Center offers

- support for newly bereaved families after the sudden and unexpected death of an infant.
- educational programs that reach professionals and community members.
- community outreach activities that distribute information at health fairs, conferences and other media events.
- consultation and collaboration with maternal and child health and perinatal networks and other agencies across the state.
- technical assistance and support for Child Fatality Review Teams whose purpose is the study of infant and child deaths and the development of local safety awareness initiatives.
The statewide program is funded through the New York State Department of Health and sponsored by the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University.
